Saturday Music Links – Chris Thile Edition

My wife and I once saw Chris perform this Bach prelude from the Violin Partita No. 3 live in Cleveland, of all places, when he was touring with The Mutual Admiration Society, a project band featuring Nickel Creek fronted by Toad The Wet Sprocket’s Glen Phillips. (By the way, doesn’t that song remind you of Peter Murphy? Just sayin’.)

Chris’ latest band is Punch Brothers, an offshoot of his How To Grow A Woman band, who mix things up by playing really traditional sounding bluegrass (gratuitous Steve Martin banjo playing at the link) and more experimental composititions like Radiohead’s “Morning Bell” and weird pop material that sounds traditional like this cover of The White Stripes’ “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”. Kind of a 21st century New Grass Revival, if you will. (Additional gratuitous Big Mon sighting at the last link.)
